Rename PDF Files Automatically

Stop hunting for “scan0001.pdf” and “IMG_2041.jpg”. SmartSave reads each document — invoices, receipts, lab reports, prescriptions, statements, letters — and names it by date, type and who it's from, all on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How does SmartSave choose a name?

It reads the text on the first pages — or recognizes it with OCR for scans and photos — then finds the document date, the kind of document (invoice, receipt, lab report, prescription, bank statement, letter, certificate, CV…), who it's from or about, and any invoice or receipt number.

What does a SmartSave name look like?

By default 2026-11-03_Invoice_Acme-Trading_INV-1042.pdf: date first so files sort in time order, then the type and name. You can put the type or name first instead, or use spaces for a more readable style.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Text reading and OCR both run in your browser, so invoices, medical reports and statements never leave your device.

Does renaming change the file?

No. Only the name changes — the content, quality and size of every PDF and image stay exactly the same.

Can it rename files inside a folder?

Yes, in Chrome and Edge on a computer. Choose “Rename files in a folder”, review the names and they're renamed in place. Other browsers download the renamed files as a ZIP.

Which dates does it use?

The date printed on the document (issue, invoice or report date), skipping birth and due dates. If there is none, it uses the PDF's creation date, then the file's own date.
